Make learning practical

Daily decisions matter in an environmental programme.

← All insights

A training session is useful when it changes the decision someone makes at work. For waste management, that decision may be where to place a material, when to report a damaged container or how to recognise that a collection arrangement has changed.

Open water landscape

Build the session around materials the participants actually handle. Show the container, label and working location. Ask people to explain what they would do when the normal station is full or when a material does not match the available descriptions.

Resiter Perú’s DIADESOL activities use participation and practical learning across industry and mining. The underlying principle is straightforward: people retain an operating instruction more readily when they can connect it with a recognisable task.

Include contractors and new arrivals in the learning plan. A site can have strong permanent-team knowledge while leaving the first handover unclear to visitors. Supervisors need a short, consistent way to communicate local arrangements before work starts.

Return to the work area after the session. Observe whether instructions are usable and invite questions without treating every uncertainty as a failure. The feedback should improve both the procedure and the physical arrangement, not simply add another attendance record.
